So, the stadium formerly known as St James’ Park and set to be known as the Sports Direct Arena until someone stumps up some cash is getting a new name, but the question is: what will it be and who will be the new sponsor? Everyone connected to Newcastle United has had a say on Mike Ashley’s latest move today, including former Newcastle chairman Sir John Hall. Being interviewed by the BBC in front of what looked like a mansion (he’s done well for himself), Sir John jokingly mentioned Tesco, but could it be a match match in heaven?
The supermarket has bucket loads of money and likes to do things on the cheap – something Ashley is used to at his Sports Direct stores. Tesco’s slogan is even ‘Every Little Helps’, which seems to be Mike’s attitude in terms of this latest stunt. It would be a marketing dream for both as well, as Tesco’s platic bags are ripe for the famous black and white stripes (see the picture I mocked up on Paint left – I have already got a patent on this product).
In all seriousness Mike Ashley has just shot himself in the foot again and shown that his ideas and those of the Newcastle fans couldn’t be further apart. All revenue streams should be investigated, but there are some things that are worth more than money: namely the history and heritage of Newcastle United football club. Long live St James’ Park and I can assure you that SJP will be here to stay on this blog, no matter who comes in as a sponsor!
