Newcastle are in Carling Cup action against Scunthorpe at Glanford Park tonight and the big news is that Sylvain Marveaux is making his competitive debut for the Magpies. The French winger has been working his way back to fitness since joining on a free in the summer, and it will be good to see him in action alongside compatriot Yohan Cabaye, who stepped it up against Sunderland.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has named a strong eleven for the cup, with five of Saturday’s team starting again tonight. Pards has also gone for three attacking players in the shape of Peter Lovenkrands, Demba Ba and Leon Best. Whether Newcastle line up as a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 remains to be seen, but here is the starting eleven in full:

Krul, Simpson, Coloccini, Williamson, R Taylor, Marveaux, Cabaye, Gosling, Lovenkrands, Ba, Best

My only slight disappoinment about this team is that there’s no place for Haris Vuckic. He could only make it onto the bench, but hopefully he’ll feature at some time this evening. Also on the bench is Shane Ferguson who is coming back from injury and Sammy Ameobi, who was free-scoring in pre-season.

Here’s the bench in full:

Soderberg, S Taylor, Smith, Ferguson, Abeid, Vuckic, Sammy Ameobi

Any predictions for tonight?
