Last ditch bid from Newcastle for ‘The Broom’ to appease the Toon Army

There’s nothing quite like leaving things till the last minute, but that’s what Newcastle have done in this transfer window. Having still not spent a penny of the £35 million recouped from Andy Carroll on a striker, Newcastle have made a last ditch bid to pip Fulham to the signing of Bryan Ruiz. However, is the FC Twente forward the number nine that the Magpies have been craving for, or is the Costa Rican another winger to add to the ranks?

Why Newcastle have left it this late God only knows; Alan Pardew must have been tearing his hair out like the rest of us. However, at least Newcastle have made a substantial bid for a forward, but what do we know of Bryan Ruiz? The 26-year-old stands at 6ft 2in and plays in the Dutch Eredivisie for FC Twente. Currently wearing the number 10 shirt in Holland, is Ruiz capable of making the step up to the number nine?

He definitely wouldn’t be your classic number nine, but Ruiz has scored 36 league goals in 61 appearances during his two years in Holland. Previous spells at Alajuelense and Gent didn’t represent such a good return for Ruiz, achieving between a 1 in 3 and 1 in 4 strike rate. As far as his international record is concerned, he’s scored just 9 times in his 43 caps for Costa Rica – not exactly prolific.

For those of you who are interested, Ruiz was known as La Escoba or the broom in his early career due his height and long, scraggly hair. Ruiz’s agent Walter Mortelmans has said: “Nothing is settled yet. We will make a decision later on tonight.” So will Ruiz join Fulham or is he on his way to Newcastle? More importantly, would he be a good signing? To be honest, I’d accept anyone right now, apart from Liam Ridgewell, who Newcastle are also being linked with…

What an outrageously dumb thing to say.
“Why have Newcastle waited so long”

They haven’t waited so long. For 3 months they have systematically worked their way through a list of acceptable candidates.

Its not like they sat on their arses for 11 weeks and only decided to start doing something about it on Tuesday

@Archie BRand: I guess then the question should be, why have none of the other ‘acceptable candidates’ materialised, leaving a 3 month search to go down to the last 3 hours of the transfer window and a seemingly increasingly desperate attempt to either get someone through the door, or at least appear to be making the attempt to do so…

we are a bloody joke!!!!! as usual we leave everything to the last minute in the hope we’ll run out of time and the fat one wont have to spend a penny!!!! it wouldnt surprise me if they suddenly say someones come in for colo or tiote!
PERSONALLY I WOULD HAVE NEITHER OF THE PLAYERS MENTIONED AS IT SMACKS OF DESPERATION!! I’D RATHER WE GO WITH WHAT WE’VE GOT AND WAIT TILL JAN!!
AND DONT FORGET WE COULD ALWAYS TAKE SOMEONE ON LOAN TILL JAN!!! BUT I HAVE SAID FOR WEEKS NOW THAT WE WOULDNT GET ANYONE IN FOR THE STRIKERS POSITION!! IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS WE WILL HAVE HEADLINES IN THE CHRONICLE STATING THAT AMEOBI WILL SAVE US MILLIONS WHEN HE GETS BACK FROM INJURY!!!! ANY PROFESSONAL CLUB WOULD HAVE HAD IT SORTED BEFORE THE WINDOW OPENED INSTEAD WE HAVE HAD WEEKS OF US GOING AFTER PLAYERS WHO EITHER DIDNT WANT TO COME OR THE CLUBS WOULD NOT SELL THEM!! WHICH I BELIEVE WAS THE AIM OF OUR ILLUSTRIOUS OWNER ALL THE TIME !! WASTE TIME ON THESE PLAYERS AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT THE WINDOWS CLOSED!!

i dont believe a word of this bull.
The same last ditch were supposed to be made in the last 2 windows and we ended up with nothing.
The board leave it so late knowing that there is very little,or no chance of a deal being done.
Why wait for a club to almost sign a player before trying to HYJACK that player.
    EXCUSES EXCUSES,EXCUSES.

Take a look around. Its transfer deadline day most clubs are doing the same. now support the club instead of slagging them off for doing exactly what every other club is doing at the moment.

  • DA says:

I’m not slagging the club off, I just thought our priority since February was to get a striker in, preferably before the season started… I think we’ve made some very good signings as it happens, but no striker yet.
