Why £7m may still not be enough

Newcastle United believe they have found the ideal candidate to lead the line and wear the famous No.9 shirt, in PSG hit man Mevlut Erdinc, according to MirrorFootball. The Magpies have upped their previous £5m bid to what is thought to be around £7m to bring the Turkish international to Tyneside.

Erdinc had a fantastic first season in the French capital, netting 19 times in all competitions after signing from FC Sochaux for 9 million euros. The recent campaign has seen the 24 year old fail to repeat his spectacular form, proving to be a frustrating year for the danger man, which has seen him booed by his own supporters.

Unfortunately for Alan Pardew, his number one target is determined to stay and prove all his critics wrong at the Parc des Princes and he told L’Equipe,

“I stay in Paris, I want to impose myself here and I do not fear competition. I’m ready. Anyway, there is always competition, at all clubs.”

After only two seasons for PSG that has seen him rattle the net 23 times in 53 league appearances, it seems highly unlikely he will depart this summer for as little as £7m, considering he is tied to the club until 2013… plus he is happy to stay with his current employers.

So unless Mike Ashley is prepared to dig deeper to bring him to St James’, I just can’t see this one happening…

While NUFC have Demba Ba, there is no other striker but Ranger that does not carry around a history of bad injuries, or is injury prone. So, to me, finding a healthy and tested striker is a must if one does not want to go through a what the end of last season was like redux. Europe seems to be where the club could find someone with the resume, as the UK strikers are mostly unproven. I keep thinking of who AP will bring on for Ba, if NUFC get a lead that he wants to protect, as well as not overwork Ba’s bad knee.
