The one deficiency Newcastle’s players and board share

Jose Enrique broke his silence regarding his future at the club, via Twitter at the weekend. The club’s disregard of communication also stretches to the playing staff, it seems. The Spaniard cited the club’s transfer policy and apparent lack of ambition as the reason for his desire for seeking pastures new.

“The Club is letting go of all the main players. Seriously, do you think is the fault of the players? Andy, etc Nolan? This club will never fight again to be among the top 6 with this policy.”

Hopefully, this will hasten the departure of, perhaps, our most talented player and allow the club to move on from the whole embargo. The club may have pocketed £35 million from selling Carroll but the effect that it has had on the playing staff at the club, and also prospective acquisitions, could be worth more than the pocketed cash.

Enrique went on to say that the money that the club were offering was not the problem, but the lack of ambition inherent in the club’s position with regards to transfers. It would appear that the players share the fans’ frustrations.

The players with genuine talent are not happy with only a big wage, they need the often quoted ‘project’ and the lure of European competition; something Newcastle strive to achieve the cheap way (or the Arsenal way). The problem being that, if qualification for Europe is not achieved or, at the least, visible signs of progression made, the club cannot demonstrate its ambition and disillusionment from players and fans alike ensues.

The club’s top men do not seem willing to make allowances on their strict policy. Whilst this strategy will ensure the club’s long term financial viability, any success achieved can only ever be short-lived whilst the club has an open policy of allowing their best players to leave.
