Please, Newcastle let Sunderland get their man!

There aren’t many occasions when I hope Sunderland get one over on Newcastle, but this is certainly one of them. At the weekend Newcastle were rumoured to be rivalling their north-east rivals for Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson, and there have been a few more murmurings about it during the week. While I wouldn’t usually be anti-Newcastle bringing a new player into their squad, I think a move for the Irishman would be a big mistake.

Darron Gibson is in a group of Man United players who could be classed as second-rate, alongside the likes of John O’Shea and Wes Brown, in fact any Red Devil that Sunderland have been linked with this summer! Squad players at Old Trafford, if they were to move it would be for regular first team football, but I don’t think that’s something Gibson would get at St James’ Park. At 23 years of age, this is what the Irish international needs at this time in his career, but at Newcastle would he actually add anything to the squad?

I think Newcastle already have their very own Darron Gibson; his name is Danny Guthrie, and not just because both of their initials are DG! Both are relatively stylish midfielders, whose best attribute is their passing. However, both struggle to have a huge influence on matches week in week out, and don’t seem to be able to grab the game by the scruff of the neck in the middle of the park. They drift in and out of matches too often, and Newcastle can’t afford anyone to go missing in their starting eleven.

Newcastle’s midfield is looking pretty strong right now, maybe not in terms of strength in depth, but as a standalone four (or five), for sure. Then there’s a few youngsters coming through who will fancy their chances of breaking into the squad on a regular basis, and some starting time would be good for them. Shane Ferguson has already shown he is capable of making the step up, Kazenga Lua Lua could be an exciting prospect if he stays, and we still all hope Haris Vuckic becomes the top class player he’s been touted to be.

Finally there’s the fee. £5 million is hardly a bargain, but then I suppose that’s what you have to come to expect when buying Premier League players in this day and age. Yohan Cabaye cost less than that and he’s a French international who just won his domestic league. So, while I hope Newcastle get the better of Sunderland twice next season, the Black Cats can get their man this time.

Agreed, I don’t want Gibson and we don’t need him!

  • Ken Ashberry says:

    Danny Guthrie!!!
    Have you seen him play?
He’s a Liverpool reject and Bolton were glad to see the back of him too.
    The future is French!

Gibson and o’shea second rate? Every player at your club must be fourth rate then. No wonder your always fighting relegation.

    • Collie McCabe says:

Yeah good man Jeff, “always fighting relegation”,you know your football dont ye…..NUFC’s avg premiership league position since 2001 is 10th, bar the relegation season we have never finished below 14th since the premier leagues inception and We were never in the bottom 4 last year.

True about Gibson not being needed however he is a good player just not better then what we have

Wes Brown…second rate? With 5 Premier league, 2 FA Cup, 2 Football League, 4 x Community Shields and 2 EUFA Championships medals to his name…………..

John O’Shea has 5 PL, 1 FA Cup, 3 FL, 2 CS, 1 Champs League and 1 World Club winners medals to his name……….

and some nugget from a team whose last domestic trophy was nearly SIXTY years ago…and last “anything” they won was the Inter Toto Last team standing competition, complete with scroll and wooden plaque!!( the football equivalent of musical chairs ) calls them second rate…………. talk about deluded mags fans…. there’s the proof!!

  • obdk says:

if gibson is second rate then yours clubs best player is em u say ur average league position is 10th right? Ur best player is 10th rate…sure deluded fan

@scalpels…..the more interesting stat would bs how many games were plated in those silvery seasons, by the players in question. Easier to be a squad player in a successful side than a winner in an average side, look at owen 10 games played last season and he has his first league medal, where’s the pride in that!

  • karl says:

@zztops. They have actually both played at least 25 games in each of the last 10 seasons. Thats what i mean about quiet but effective. They have both started in champions league finals. Wes brown has an assist in one (2008).

  • Zztops says:

@Karl…. I know that’s my point, a side getting to the latter stages in fa cup, league cup & euro comps play roughly 55+ games

  • NTB says:

im from ireland and i think gibson deffo second rate player but o’shea is class when he plays CB, he’s a good very good tackler and pretty good in the air and also he’s a very good passer, i’d love him to sign.

  • karl says:

@zztops. In 2007/08 manchester united won the league and champions league. Wes brown started 52 games in this season. Thats every game bar 3. He played 180 minutes against barcelona in which they didnt concede a goal. He then played the full 120 in the final and set up a the opening goal with a great cross for ronaldo with his weaker left foot. Thats consistency. O’shea has played over 40 games in a championship winning sides before. My point is that o’shea and brown are a lot better than what we have, and are gravely underestimated. Look at their versatility. How many players do we have that can do a great job in several positions? Let alone be able to play anywhere across the back four. Players like these are lot more valuable than we think. They are gold to a manager. Gibson is debatable, but these two are no brainers.

  • obdk says:

any player associated wit manchester united is class. Way better dan wat y’all have

  • Summers says:

I think Gibson, O’shea and Wes Brown are good players. O’Shea is the unsung utility man in my opinion, does his job and doesnt complain, plays where hes needed. Wes Brown is probably past it but used to be a good player and I always thought Newcastle should have signed hima few years ago. Gibson is also a quality player but I think hes suffered from lack of first team action, but he still played in a Champions league semi-final demolition a few weeks ago, scoring and getting an assist. So I do think hes a good player. Nobody on here is saying that these players are crap, because theyre not. But to say that O’Shea and Brown are in their prime now is silly, theyre not needed by Fergie other than to fill in some gaps when theyre is some key injuries. Sunderland are welcome to older players, albeit ones of good quality but I doubt theyd enjoy their time at Sunderland because well….its a horrible place and Steve Bruces face isnt much to look at haha. Gibson is a good midfielder and I certainly wouldnt mind signing him but if he wants to leave Old Trafford it will be for first team football and our central midfield seems to be a bit jam packed these days with Tiote, Ben Arfa, Cabaye and possibly Barton if he gets moved back into his central role and that is very tough competition no matter what Man U fans say, why would we want to pay £5m for a player who will most likely sit on the bench. Although then again weve wasted far more money on far bigger piece of crap players over the years lol P.S. just because a player is in the Man U set up doesnt make them a fantastic player, sometimes they dont develop the way Fergie would like i.e. Obertan, Chris Eagles and you let Rossi go and hes now amazing!

  • Toon51 says:

Having watched the Toon for over 40 years now, I struggle to work out how our lot could call O’shea or Brown 2nd rate. Both bloody good players infact, but Gibson looks poor at best. Let the Mackems have him, but would love to nick the other lads from the dorty red n whites.

  • Paul Whelan says:

Once again Newcastle fans showing how insular and DELUDED they are!
Any of our MUFC players could walk straight into your team.No wonder you are becoming a club no-one likes.

  • Aaran says:

The Newcastle fans are not the deluded ones here the MUFC fans are, Darren Gibson is a player who will end up in the Championship going up and down with teams and never doing anything great, Wes Brown is worse then Titus Bramble and O’shea is a very good utility player nothing more.

And I personaly would not want any of them, the only reason MUFC fans can’t see it is that they have the best manager in the world.
