FIVE memorable moments for Newcastle

Considering this is Newcastle’s first season back in the Premier League after getting promoted from the Championship at the first attempt, it has been a pretty successful campaign. Newcastle have provided the Toon Army with plenty of enjoyable moments, some of which will live long in the memory.

With the season coming to an end, I thought now would be as good a time as ever to have a look at Newcastle’s five most memorable moments of the season. There were plenty to choose from, but the handful I’ve selected, I hope you agree, are all crackers. Hatem Ben Arfa’s stunning strike against Everton would have made the top five had the Frenchman not been ruled out through injury for the rest of the season.

5: Winning at The Emirates – Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and The Emirates; arguably the three hardest places to get a result. While Newcastle got a draw at the Bridge last weekend, that was against a Chelsea side that had nothing to play for. When Newcastle went to The Emirates in November, Arsenal were title contenders. But Newcastle beat them 1-0, earning a clean sheet, and showed their resolve by holding out in the second half. This result was made even better by the fact that Newcastle shipped four against the Gunners in the Carling Cup just ten days previously.

4: The comeback against Wigan
– After a creditable win away at Everton, Newcastle were heading to three straight defeats as they fell 2-0 behind to Wigan. Home to Wigan – a game you simply can’t afford to lose. Not only did Fabricio Coloccini’s last minute equaliser salvage a draw, but it greatly lifted morale and confidence, and Newcastle went on to beat West Ham, Sunderland and Arsenal in their greatest spell of the season.

Watch the equaliser here.

3: Starting the season at St James’ in style – We all knew that Newcastle wouldn’t get anything from their trip to Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the season, but the first home game against Villa was a very winnable game, and so it proved. After John Carew missed a penalty Newcastle ran riot. Started off by a Joey Barton stunner, Kevin Nolan bagged a brace and Andy Carroll (ssh) netted a hat-trick. What a great way to start the season at St James’ Park and surprisingly it wasn’t the only 6-0 of the season, as West Ham suffered the same fate.Vezi mai multe din Sport pe 220.ro
