Newcastle will be disappointed to leave St James’ Park with nothing today, as an entertaining Premier League encounter with Everton was won 2-1 by the Toffees.

Newcastle started sluggishly, but took the lead half-way through the first half as Leon Best was left with a simple header after Tim Howard parried Kevin Nolan’s shot. Just as Alan Pardew’s men looked to be getting into their stride, Everton equalised on the half hour as Leon Osman finished off a counter attack. The Toffees then took the lead as Phil Jagielka was left unmarked from a Leighton Baines free-kick. Newcastle pressed for an equaliser in the second half but to no avail, and their day was further worsened by an injury to Jose Enrique.
