Newcastle are considering a move for Manchester United stalwart Michael Carrick this summer if he’s becomes a free agent, according to reports from The Times.

The 34-year-old midfielder’s current deal is due to expire in under six months’ time and, despite indications he wants to stay put, the club have not yet offered him fresh terms.

Carrick remains a key player despite his age, he’s made 30 appearances this term, but the longer the situation drags on the rockier his future at Old Trafford will seem.

And reports claim that Newcastle have been alerted, with the five-time Premier League champion a tempting option for them.

Carrick would offer a wealth of experience at the highest level, which could be beneficial for a Magpies team that has been plagued by relegation worries in recent seasons.

However, any move would be dependent on the North East side maintaining their top tier status, which is by no means a guarantee with only Aston Villa, Sunderland and Norwich below Steve McClaren’s side.

Newcastle United U-21 coach Peter Beardsley has compared January signing Seydou Doumbia to club legend Faustino Asprilla, according to reports on the club’s official website.

Doumbia was an unused substitute when the Tyneside club beat West Bromwich Albion this past weekend after making a winter switch from Roma, and trained with the squad for the first time on Monday.

The Ivory Coast international also featured for the Magpies U-21 side’s 2-1 win over Stoke City, but only played the first half after Jamie Sterry was sent off.

However, during his time on the pitch, Beardsley saw something in Doumbia that reminded him of cult hero and former teammate Tino Asprilla.

“Having had him with us yesterday and today, the first thing I thought was ‘Tino Asprilla’,” Beardsley said.

“When he we kicked off, he stepped over the ball and it was funny for me because obviously I used to play with Tino. As stupid as it sounds, that was the highlight of the game for me, when he stepped over the ball!

“The crowd almost went one way and the ball went the other. Class.”

Following the fixture, the 28-year-old was mobbed by supporters who wanted a picture with the former CSKA Moscow ace, with fans also creating a new chant for their potential hero.

“He’ll love it,” said Beardsley. “He can’t speak a lot of English but he’s a smiley, happy person and he obviously wants to be here.

“Hopefully, if needed, he’ll get the chance to score a few goals.”

Doumbia has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring 11 goals.

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has come out to reveal his desire to keep Cheick Tiote at the club despite heavy links of a move to China, Express reports.

The 29-year-old was believed to be on his way out of St James’ Park during the January window amid speculation that the club was ready to cash in on his services.

However, McClaren has now confirmed that he is ready to reject an exit for Tiote after the defensive midfielder provided a solid display in the 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion this past weekend.

“Tiote has only been back training [following a knee injury] with us for two days but he’s 100 per cent committed,” he said.

“If he keeps his composure and passes simply, he’s a very good player. I hope he stays now.”

The club even prepared for the departure of Ivory Coast international by signing Henri Saivet from Ligue 1 outfits Bordeaux as his potential replacement.

With Tiote’s exit now unlikely, there will be a host of competition for a spot in midfield as the Magpies also completed a deal for Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City last month.

He has registered eight starts and another four substitute appearances for his side so far this term, but is yet to score a goal.

Newcastle United have NOT inserted relegation clauses in the deals that saw the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend recently arrive, according to the Chronicle Live.

The North East giants splashed around £29m on four players over the course of the January transfer window in their battle to beat the drop.

The recent win over West Bromwich Albion lifted the club out of the bottom three, though they are far from safe.

Now, Mark Douglas at the Newcastle Evening Chronicle has revealed none of the new arrivals have relegation clauses in their deals.

That means, should the worst happen and the Magpies drop out of the Premier League, they would lose out on around £40m in TV revenue.

Shelvey and Townsend, both England internationals, arrived for £12m each from Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, signing long term deals at St. James’ Park.

With 13 games to go, Steve McClaren’s side sit just one point above the drop zone.

Newcastle United are plotting an audacious move for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, report the Daily Star.

The 26-year old forward is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated at Anfield as questions marks over his attitude arise.

Despite his length injury problems, his pain threshold has been questioned and there is increasing speculation he has fallen out with manager Jurgen Klopp.

The England international is no doubt one of the most talented players in the league when fit, though his past two seasons have been marred by injury.

The report claims, that while he is rated highly on Merseyside, Klopp will consider selling the former Manchester City and Chelsea forward.

Arsenal and West Ham United have been linked with making moves, though Newcastle are the latest name to be mentioned.

The North East giants are in desperate need of a striker having failed to land West Brom ace Saido Berahino.

Though Sturridge has been sidelined so frequently, he has still notched an impressive 37 goals in 60 game for the Reds.

Watford’s Odion Ighalo has burst onto the scene in the Premier League this season. 15 goals in all competitions have brought him to the attention of many, but he is not the only eye-catching Nigerian to have graced the Premier League.

Other Nigerian’s plying their trade in the Premier League currently include Manchester City’s emerging young striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Chelsea’s long-serving midfielder John Obi Mikel, amongst others.

The African nation has a history of producing some fantastic players, many of whom have made their mark on English football. Featuring an exciting blend of pace and power mixed with guile and technical ability, the success of their National side the “Super Eagles” in both the ’94 and ’98 World Cups led to an influx of players joining the ranks of the Premier League over that time and beyond.

Here we look at five of the best to have entertained the crowds of English football fans over the years.

Being a Newcastle fan is never easy and it looks as though the Magpies are bracing themselves for another relegation scrap as we head into the ‘business end’ of the 2015/16 campaign.

Steve McClaren is hardly working wonders up in the north-east, but this January transfer window could have assisted his attempts to clamber their way out of the relegation fight and reach the relative security of mid-table comfort. On the other hand, the current squad at Newcastle shouldn’t be anywhere near where they are so it isn’t saying much to say that McClaren could pull them away from the drop.

Both Newcastle and their dearest rivals, Sunderland, strengthened significantly in this January window, but could it have been so much more for the Magpies?

The players McClaren and Mike Ashley brought in came at great expense, but could they have been more shrewd in this window? Were the real defensive issues met?

Here’s the XI that Newcastle could have had….

Despite spending close to £50million over the course of the summer transfer window, and subsequently parting ways with yet another small fortune across the past month, Steve McClaren and his persistent Newcastle United outfit still seemingly have it all to do this season.

The impending threat of relegation remains very real for the Magpies looking into the immediate future, with the overall atmosphere in and around St. James’ Park feeling just as tense and uncertain as it has done for quite some time now…

However, after landing a succession of potential stars on Tyneside throughout the recent January transfer period – have Newcastle United simply spent their way out of trouble this winter?

Seydou Doumbia was the last name to eventually seal his move to St. James’ on what turned out to be a somewhat underwhelming transfer deadline-day truth be told. Although 28-year-old Ivory Coast international didn’t exactly set the world alight when operating for AS Roma amid the Italian Serie A last season, the striker in question could still nonetheless come up trumps for Steve McClaren’s side.

The former CSKA Moscow favourite arrives with a very impressive goal-scoring record in the Champions League of course – and as Newcastle have admittedly failed to put away several clear-cut chances in front of goal this season – maybe this somewhat understated loan signing could potentially save the Magpies from relegation in the end.

Elsewhere this January, Newcastle United also landed themselves both Henri Saivet and Andros Townsend to help strengthen the team’s cause in the middle of the park this season. The former represents yet another gamble from the French Ligue 1 that could seemingly go either way in 2015/16, whilst the latter has barely completed a full 90 minutes for Tottenham over the past few league campaigns.

Townsend himself will likely help create a fair amount of excitement in and around St. James’ due to his prior reputation with England on the international scene, but arguably fails to go down as someone worthy of such a hefty price tag. The Magpies hierarchy were obviously keen on putting their money where their mouth is this January, for even though the former Spurs winger will nevertheless strengthen the current options available to McClaren, £12million still seems a rather steep valuation.

Saivet however could prove somewhat of a success on Tyneside after seeing his signing slip largely under the radar this January, but only if the Senegalese international is issued with a fair amount of game-time from the current manager down at St. James’.

And last – but certainly not least – the Newcastle United faithful witnessed yet another £12million capture earlier on in the transfer window, but this time in the shape of former Swansea City battler and England international – Jonjo Shelvey.

The creative ball-playing midfielder has already served to impress for the Magpies since his recent departure from the Liberty Stadium, for when this 23-year-old play-maker is truly performing to the very best of his abilities in front of his respective fan-base, the limitations placed on Jonjo Shelvey ultimately prove few and far between.

Via his intelligent style of play in the middle of the park, impressive prowess when sending searching through-balls all across the pitch for his newfound teammates to run on to – and uncanny ability to make things happen just when his side seem to need it most – Steve McClaren may have sourced himself one of the signings of the entire January transfer window in this often effective central-midfielder.

Jonjo Shelvey admittedly carries a somewhat dirtier side to his overall game but as Newcastle have clearly been lacking a sense of fight and passion throughout the current season thus far, maybe the Magpies would in-fact benefit from the addition of such a personality when push invariably comes to shove this term.

So then, despite coming off second best to Roberto Martinez’ Everton last time out in the Premier League, it seems reasonable to suggest that Steve McClaren’s side have all but ensured their Premier League survival between now and the end of what has so far proven a rather unpredictable season.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has lavished praise on star midfielder Ross Barkley, who scored two penalties in their 3-0 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday, according to reports from the Mirror.

Barkley was at the central of the Toffees attacking play and ended the game with a brace, helping Everton to only their second win in their last 11 league games.

Aaron Lennon struck the opening goal early in the first half, and the winger won a penalty in the 83rd minute to give Everton the chance to seal all three points.

Barkley stepped up and made no mistake, and during injury time won one himself that saw him do a ‘Panenka’ to complete the route.

And Martinez was delighted with Barkley’s display, with the England international midfielder playing his 100th league game at the age of just 22.

“100 games in the league at 22 is not easy to achieve and he is playing a big role in the team,” he said.

“He’s a phenomenal footballer, a phenomenal person. He took responsibility with both penalties and showed how he is an assured, technical footballer.”

“It is fair to say we are learning from painful lessons. We started the game well and were strong in all departments,” he added.

“We showed a mature way of playing. Back to back clean sheets now and the team has the intent to please our fans and show what we can do.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Steve McClaren was extremely disappointed, with the Magpies still in the relegation zone two points from safety.

“In the first half we were never really in it,” McClaren said.

“The new signings will take time to gel. At West Brom we will have 52,000 cheering us on and we will have to show a reaction.

“We have shown we can react before. Fans want to see fight and we need to show it on Saturday.”

Newcastle fans, as loyal as they are, can make some pretty exceptional over reactions. Everton fans, on the other hand, were pretty happy to see their side actually take the lead in a game and not have to bare some defensive disaster in the first half an hour.

Aaron Lennon scored for the Toffees and it saw a viral attack across Twitter including several throwbacks to his ecstatic picture from the day he signed.

Naturally, Newcastle fans were taking the Everton domination all that well. It turns out the new signings haven’t had too great a start.

Apparently, Newcastle, rather than parking it, haven’t got off the bus.

Fortunately, we know the Geordies have a cracking sense of humour.

More fans were questioning their players’ desire to fight for the club, but I don’t know why they expected any differently after that infamous Shelvey vine.

It should be the biggest sin of all for players to be questioned for their desire or fight.

Newcastle should be too good to go down… but they aren’t playing like a side that will stay up.

Expect more rage from the Magpies if another defeat comes tonight…
