Newcastle United midfielder Mo Diame has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 29.

The Senegalese star has been used sparingly by manager Aliou Cisse and featured in just one match at this year’s African Cup of Nations. In a statement, Diame explained that he believes that Senegal have enough players capable of taking his place in the squad for future tournaments:

“I believe that there are now 23 Senegalese players in better shape. After much thought and consideration I feel that now is the appropriate time to focus fully on my club career.”

It means that Diame will not be travelling long distances during international breaks and will remain on Tyneside to stay fresh for Newcastle matches.

The midfielder signed from Hull City for £3.5million in the summer, and has scored six goals in 33 games in all competitions. He has however had to battle Ayoze Perez for the number 10 role this season, and certainly hasn’t been as prolific as he was for Hull in their promotion from the Championship last season.

Rafa Benitez will be hoping to reap the rewards from Diame’s international retirement from now until the end of his contract in 2019.
