Newcastle left back Paul Dummett has backed manager Rafa Benitez to attract big name signings to the club in the summer if the Magpies are promoted to the Premier League.

Players such as Mohamed Diame and Matt Ritchie dropped down a division to play for Newcastle in the Championship, and Dummett believes the reputation of the manager and the size of the club could play a key role in bringing in the right quality of talent to the Magpies. In an interview with the Evening Chronicle, Dummett said:

“Even this season there were players that dropped down from the Premier League because they knew what a massive club Newcastle was, and with the manager we had they have seen the positive stuff that was said to take the club forward. Then hopefully going forward if we achieve promotion this club can attract big names and big players. Hopefully we can do that if we get promoted.”

Promotion to the Premier League is still not guaranteed though. Newcastle’s draw against Reading, and their loss to Fulham at home at the weekend, has meant the chasing pack have closed in on the Magpies.

Brighton are now level on points with the league leaders while third placed Huddersfield Town are just six points behind with a game in hand over the top two. Rafa Benitez’s side will be hoping to return to winning ways when they face Birmingham City on Saturday.
