Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez doesn’t believe he is in a position to bring through talent from the Magpies’ youth ranks at the pace he would like.

The Spaniard told the club’s official website (via the Shields Gazette) that to compete on a level playing field with other clubs, Newcastle must spend in the transfer market rather than relying on bringing through one or two young talents from the academy every season:

“The ideal situation would be to bring a couple of players from the academy each year but if you want to compete at the highest level it is difficult. If you want to do that you have to bring in players from outside, or abroad, to compete with the other teams.”

Players such as Adam Armstrong and Jamie Sterry that have come through the system at Newcastle have been loaned out this season by Benitez to give them game time, while he focused on building an experienced squad to gain promotion back to the Premier League.

Right back Sterry was recalled from his loan spell at Coventry City in January after playing 20 times for the Sky Blues. Armstrong meanwhile has been a regular starter for fellow Championship side Barnsley, scoring five goals in 30 appearances in all competitions so far this campaign.
