While he currently schemes to try and knock Newcastle United off of their perch atop the Sky Bet Championship, things could have worked out very differently for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Solly March.

Currently a huge part of Chris Hughton’s promotion push on the south coast, just how close the England U21 international came to joining the Magpies has been revealed by the Argus.

Back in 2011, the 22-year-old reportedly had a trial with the Magpies and was seemingly poised to sign youth terms with them, though the unfortunate loss of a close friend saw him stay on the south coast during his stint with non-league Lewes.

He would later move to the AMEX, where he would become a major part of the plans Gus Poyet had at the time. Such is the impressive nature of his form in blue and white stripes, he was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England U21 side, making one appearance for the Young Lions.
