It’s absolutely time for Rafa Benitez to drop these two Newcastle United players after recent slump

As the fallout from an eerily quiet January transfer window continued even after Newcastle United’s disappointing draw with Queens Park Rangers last night, it’s fair to say these are tense times on Tyneside.

With Rafa Benitez venting his obvious frustration at not being backed in the transfer market following last night’s 2-2 draw, it would be easy to blame the fact no one arrived during the New Year sales as a result of that one game. Though, when you say that out loud, it becomes a ridiculous notion.

Would the mere presence of Andros Townsend have stopped the likes of Yoan Gouffran, Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles from losing all desire after the Rs equalised? No. Would he have made Ayoze Perez square to Matt Ritchie? No. Would he have stopped Alex Smithies from pulling off a number of good save? No.

In truth, the Magpies have limped out along for a number of weeks now and, while strengthening clearly would have been a bonus, it’s time to point the finger of blame at the current crop of players available to the Spaniard.
