Newcastle United midfielder Mo Diame has shared a big insight in regards to his plans for the future, indicating he will retire from international duty with the Senegalese national team in the coming months.

A summer signing from Hull City, the marauding midfielder missed most of the Magpies’ matches over the New Year period, travelling to Gabon to take part in the African Cup of Nations with The Lions of Teranga, who were knocked out by eventual winners Cameroon on penalties at the quarter-final stage.

However, speaking to the Sun (with our quotes sourced by the Daily Star), the 29-year-old has suggested he could soon call an end to his international career.

“It is highly likely I will retire from Senegal before the games in March.”

“I’m discussing it with people close to me to make the right decision.

“It’s a matter of whether I’m ready to play through to the World Cup finals next year and the African Nations Cup in 2019.”

Diame made his debut for Senegal back in 2011 while on the books of Wigan Athletic and has so far recorded 32 caps for them, also competing in the 2012 Olympics.

It’ll be a boost for the Magpies, who will hope to rely on him for their promotion push and potentially life in the Premier League next term, should Rafa Benitez keep his side within the top two places of the table.
