As revealed by the Chronicle, Newcastle United players held an inquest during a tense half-time period during their recent draw with Bristol City.

Despite largely operating at completely different ends of the Championship table, the Robins took a surprise 2-0 lead going into half-time, leaving the Magpies with a hill to climb if they were going to rescue anything from Saturday’s game.

However, skipper Jamaal Lascelles and key midfielder Jonjo Shelvey reportedly had some frank words for their teammates at the interval. Though there were some eyebrows raised when Lascelles was handed the captaincy by Rafa Benitez over the summer, the defender is absolutely growing into his role with the armband.

As a result, the home side managed to score two goals in the closing 45 minutes to salvage a point against Bristol City, retaining their unbeaten run since the end of the January transfer window.

While the situation clearly wasn’t as dire, it’s akin to the half-time row the Magpies had when playing away at Southampton back in April, which at least helped spark some good form before their relegation.
