Bolton Wanderers remain keen on bringing Newcastle United winger Sammy Ameobi back to the club, according to the Chronicle

Such is the extent of the injury crisis currently plaguing Rafa Benitez at St. James’ Park, the 24-year-old midfielder was recalled from his loan stint in Lancashire to help round out the squad amid the busy winter period in the Championship.

He was an unused substitute during the Toon’s narrow 2-1 win against Brentford on the weekend the Trotters are said to be keen on luring him back to their own promotion cause from Sky Bet League One.

However, Benitez is light on options in wide areas right now with a long-term injury to Rolando Aarons and Chrisitan Atsu’s participation in the African Cup of Nations and the club’s academy graduate could be kept on as an extra body.

Ameobi, younger brother of cult-hero Shola, has made 53 league appearances in black and white since 2010 amid a variety of loan spells at the likes of Middlesbrough, Cardiff City and then the League One side.

Bolton are currently under a transfer embargo, so any deal is currently difficult to pull off anyway, though the Toon have been linked with moves for wingers such as Stewart Downing and Andros Townsend of late.
