While he’s currently away on international duty with Ghana at the African Cup of Nations, Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu has been hitting headlines of late.

The 25-year-old winger had been reported, according to Turkish outlet Fanatikto have been the subject of talks between parent club Chelsea and Super Lig leaders Başakşehir over a potential quick-fire move away from St. James’ Park.

While the former FC Porto ace hasn’t always been a regular under Rafa Benitez at St. James’ Park, the Magpies are somewhat light in options when it comes to wide areas, with only Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran currently available to Benitez.

So it was little surprise to see quotes in the Sunderland Echo from Benitez claiming such suggestions were wide of the mark and Atsu would not be allowed to leave, at least before the end of the current campaign. With the Magpies having an option to make it a permanent deal at the end of the season.

In fact, perhaps in defiance of the rumours, Atsu moved to post a message on Twitter wishing Newcastle good luck ahead of their clash with Brentford later today. Hopefully, it’s a further indication that the African winger will be sticking around.
