As ever at this time of year, the proverbial transfer rumour mill keeps on churning during the New Year market.

With Newcastle United hell-bent on promotion, they are always likely to be linked with a number of players, though reports suggesting Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing could be a target have come slightly out of left-field.

The 32-year-old is reportedly ready to leave the Riverside on loan after falling down the pecking order under Aitor Karanka, though is said to also have interest in the Premier League.

As you’d imagine considering his standing in the game ever since his move to Liverpool in 2011 (other than a brief return to the England setup in 2014), the notion of his arrival is barely going to lift backsides off of seats at St. James’ Park.

However, it’s important to remember the position the Magpies are currently in as they desperately chase what is a vital promotion back to the Premier League.

So with all this in mind, here are TWO pros and TWO cons to Newcastle signing Stewart Downing in January.
