Though they may be forced to wait until the summer, the Chronicle have claimed that top brass at Newcastle United are keen on a deal for Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

While that might not be the most surprising news you’re ever likely to hear, the fact that any move for the 24-year-old would reportedly break the Toon’s £16m transfer record is somewhat confusing.

Clearly, Wilson is of Premier League standard quality and may be an upgrade on the current incumbent of the club’s iconic No.9 shirt, a certain Dwight Gayle, though would he really represent value for money?

The former Coventry City ace isn’t a monumental improvement on the Championship’s top scorer, nor would he truly give the Magpies another dynamic upfront, only marginally improving what Gayle does so well in the second tier.

So, with that in mind, here are THREE ways Newcastle United would be better served in spending a club record fee this summer, should they go up.
