As many as he’s scored this season, Dwight Gayle’s opener against Brentford on Saturday was a landmark one for the 26-year-old.
His good finish from a tight angle at Griffin Park to break the deadlock halfway through the first-half was the £10m man’s 20th goal of what is proving to be a champagne campaign in black and white.
It means the former Crystal Palace ace is the first man to reach that milestone since Magpies legend Alan Shearer in 2003/04. Despite doubts over his ability to carry the iconic No.9 shirt at St. James’ Park, he’s proven to be the league’s most clinical forward by some distance.
So much so that the club’s official Twitter account has released a video compiling all 20 of his goals this season. While he’s struggling with an injury right now, there will hopefully be many more to come as the season enters its proverbial business end.
