According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United are hopeful of making a transfer breakthrough this week after what has been a long January window so far at St. James’ Park.

Despite being linked with a number of players from around the globe, the Magpies are yet to add anyone to their title tilt and are thought to have missed out on targets such as Tom Cleverley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. While Rafa Benitez has one of the strongest squads in the Championship at his disposal, injuries and the African Cup of Nations have taken a toll on his ranks at St. James’ Park.

Still, the report suggests top brass on Tyneside are reportedly optimistic about finally landing a player who could potentially help the Spaniard return the Toon to the top flight at the first time of asking, amid strong links with former winger Andros Townsend.

Their attempts thus far are understood to have been stopped by the inflated valuations this time of year brings, though pulling power is not thought to be a problem for Newcastle right now, despite the fact a Premier League return is by no means guaranteed.
