Though Newcastle’s eventual 4-0 win over Rotherham looked rather like standard procedure in the end, there’s little doubt the Millers made it difficult in the opening 45-minutes or so.

Indeed, if it wasn’t for a stunning save from Karl Darlow (after his initial slip up), the Yorkshire outfit would have taken the lead to silence St. James’ Park and really ramp up the pressure on the Magpies. While sliding out to collect an easy save, the 26-year-old saw the ball slide underneath his body as Rotherham closed in.

To be fair, DeAndre Yedlin’s crucial initial tackle should also be commended, though Darlow stole the show when he jumped over the sliding Ciaran Clark to prevent the ball from going in. Since, the video has been the rounds on social media as the former Nottingham Forest man went from zero-to-hero in a matter of moments.

Speaking to NUFC.co.uk about the incident, Darlow has shed some light on the matter.

“I slid out and I knew that I was going to take the ball over the line, so I tried to leave the ball with my hand on it, and unfortunately momentum carried me out,” he told the official site.

“Then Yedlin gets back, and it was just a bit chaotic after that. Thankfully I made the save and kept it at 0-0 at the time, and that’s the main thing.

“It was a little bit scary, but these things happen in football. It was just instinct, and not wanting it to be my fault that a goal had gone in, so it was desperation more than anything I think!”
