According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United are only willing to sign Andros Townsend on loan for the rest of the season amid plenty of talk surrounding the 25-year-old’s future in south London.

Following the Magpies’ relegation from the Premier League back in May, the England international quickly jumped ship for Alan Pardew’s Eagles side, where has struggled to convince. Such a run of form has rounded off a strange year for the winger, who pretty much immediately impressed on Tyneside following his move from Tottenham 12 months ago.

He was then called into the provisional England squad for the European Championships, though didn’t make the final cut and moved back to the Big Smoke after Palace activated his relegation release clause at St. James’ Park. New boss Sam Allardyce is believed to have given him a pep-talk in an attempt to restore his form, though an upturn in performances is yet to be seen.

According to this report, the Premier League strugglers are keen to recoup the money they splashed out on him just six months ago, something that could potentially scupper a move back to the North East. ‘Big Sam’ is reportedly ready to sacrifice him, though only on a permanent arrangement it seems.

For their part, those at St. James’ Park are understood to only be willing to borrow him during what is hopefully their last few months in the second-tier.
