While speaking to talkSPORT, former Newcastle United forward Micky Quinn has revealed he’s heard Rafa Benitez will be backed with further funds in the January transfer window.

The Toon Army spent big in the summer on the likes of Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle and Ciaran Clark (amongst others), though those were largely offset by the money they received for a host of flops.

Sitting atop the Championship table right now, the Toon Army look to be in a good position ahead of the New Year sales.

Moves for midfielders such as Hector Herrera and Josh Windass of Porto and Rangers respectively have been touted as the Spaniard prepares for the most crucial part of his promotion push on Tyneside.

Now, according to Quinn, the 56-year-old will be helped by top brass at St. James’ Park along the way as Mike Ashley and company continue to help his revolution in black and white.

“I’ve heard he [Benitez] has a few quid to spend in January,” he said.

“I’ve seen enough Championship teams now to think that it is a moderate division. I really do.

”Even when they [Newcastle] went down to nine men, they still had 58% of the possession.”
