Former Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has been talking to the Guardian about his time in England so far.

Now with Liverpool, having moved to Anfield for around £25m over the summer, the Dutchman is a divisive figure on Tyneside following a mixed solitary campaign in black and white.

Though he was clearly a huge talent, the former PSV Eindhoven man was one of many big name stars who failed to perform as the Toon Army succumbed to a dismal relegation.

Still, unlike former teammate Moussa Sissoko, the Oranje star at least got his head down and worked over the summer, rather than publicly moaning about wanting to leave.

Now well into his second year on these shores, the 26-year-old has insisted he’s disappointed he could not make things work at St. James’ Park and wanted to restore former glories.

”Before I went to Newcastle I spoke with the manager and the people there and they had big plans to bring good players in and play for titles”,  said the midfielder.

I was really disappointed because I wanted to achieve something with Newcastle. Even if it was not a title I wanted to help the club get back to fifth-to-10th place to start with, and maybe get the club back into Europe again. Unfortunately it didn’t go that way.

”It went totally wrong. That was the biggest disappointment for me last season.”
