One of the most fascinating subplots of the season has been the success of the previously outcast Yoan Gouffran.
Barely used under Alan Pardew, John Carver or Steve McClaren, ‘The Gouff’ has been on fire of late and is yet to be on the losing side for the Magpies, playing in 12 of the last 13 games under Rafa Benitez.
Such is the nature of his tenuous position on Tyneside however, the 30-year-old has been linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Lille after impressing over the last few months.
Out of contract at the end of the season, the notion of interest in the Frenchman is certainly an intriguing one.
He’s emerged as one of the most popular players at the club since the start of the season and seeing him depart so soon after his resurgence caught alight would be rather depressing indeed.
Still, the financial sense would suggest cashing in while the club still can is the best move, considering the strength and depth within the squad.
So, here’s how Twitter reacted to the rumours.
Gouffran: Great that he's doing well, love it. But I think his contract needs to run out, we can replace in Jan if necessary. #NUFC

I expect us to sell him and get a Premier League replacement. Be unfair to hold onto him when he won't play much after.
