Former Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko says he wanted to leave the Magpies BEFORE Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League last season.

In an interview with Sofoot (quoted by Le10 Sport) Sissoko revealed he stayed with the Tyneside club in order to get into the European Championship squad for France. He felt if he had demanded to leave earlier, he may have been left in the reserves at Newcastle risking his chances of being picked by Didier Deschamps:

“I already wanted to leave Newcastle to go to the the most exclusive clubs. I had the chance, but unfortunately for me, they [Newcastle] have always refused… Knowing Newcastle, I would be losing, not to play, losing the France team and therefore the Euros. It was a lot. I took my troubles patiently, worked, made my season and gave the best of myself.”

“It pained me a club like Newcastle, a great city, a great public like that end up in the second division. But it allowed me to be part of this group that France has made a deep run to the Euros and to be here at Tottenham. If I had done things differently, maybe I would have been in the cellar, that I would not have played the Euro or that I would play with the reserve of Newcastle. Who knows.”

Sissoko eventually made his £30million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the summer transfer window but it is interesting to find out that the 27 year old was questioning his commitment to the club well before the Magpies were relegated at the end of last campaign. It will come as no surprise to some Newcastle fans who questioned his performances last season where he scored just one goal in 37 league appearances.
