Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie has said he has been frustrated by the lack of goals he has scored so far this campaign, and it is something that has been eating away at him a bit.

The 27 year old scored the third goal to seal a 3-0 victory for the Magpies over Ipswich Town at the weekend but it was first goal he has scored in the league from open play this campaign after 13 appearances. Ritchie told the club’s official website that he was glad to score and help the side to a fifth consecutive victory.

“I’ve been beating myself up a little bit. I’ve had a couple of chances of late – I had one against Norwich late on and I had one in the first half as well that I probably should have done a bit better with. I was delighted to get the goal in the end, but most importantly the three points and put them out of sight.”

Ritchie has been a consistent performer since his £12million arrival from Bournemouth in the summer, providing four assists in addition to his two league goals, but he is having to compete for a place in the side. The likes of Yoan Gouffran and Christian Atsu are providing competition in the Magpies squad as players push each other to perform in order to keep their starting places.
