Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez believes it isn’t as easy as some pundits and managers are suggesting for the Magpies in the Championship. Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy was the latest manager to claim that Newcastle’s squad should allow them to ease to promotion from the Championship this season but Rafa was keen to highlight that other teams have equally strong benches.

The Magpies are now three points ahead of second place Brighton & Hove Albion at the top the table, and Benitez said that although he had a strong squad in terms of numbers at his disposal, similar to every other Championship side, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has more quality. He told the Chronicle:

“Our squad in terms of numbers is similar to others. In terms of quality it could be better but other teams have good players on the bench. We use our players though – we make sure they are playing and competing with each other. I say we have a good squad but we encourage them to give everything and stay to a good level.”

Benitez is expected to ring the changes tonight when they face Preston North End in the EFL Cup fourth round tie. The Spanish boss will more than likely look to give some of the players who have started many matches so far this campaign more game time.
