Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez says he is happy with the amount of managerial control he has at the club. Negotiations were extensive over the summer break between the Magpies boss and the Newcastle hierarchy as they tried to keep Benitez at the club.

The Spaniard wanted a certain level of control over decision making and transfers at the club. Such responsibilities were not afforded to past managers such as Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren but in their desperation to keep a top class coach, managing director Lee Charnley ceded to Benitez’s wishes much to the delight of fans.

When asked about his relationship with Charnley and his level of control at the club, Benitez told the Evening Chronicle:

“I am happy with it. Every week, every month, every year, you try to improve something. You are always thinking: ‘If I can change this little thing, maybe it will improve this or that.’”

“You are always looking at little things, or the way that certain departments operate, but it takes time to change things.”

It seems as if the transformation in Newcastle’s backroom team is still ongoing as Benitez looks to restructure the club more to his liking. Hopefully, the changes will allow the Magpies to grow from strength to strength in contrast to the instability the club has been used to in recent years.
