Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has met with Magpies legend Alan Shearer for a cup of coffee in recent days and in his pre-match press conference for the Barnsley game yesterday, the Spaniard talked about the conversation between the pair.

As well as seeking advice from the former Newcastle striker, Benitez revealed that Shearer told him that he now feels the club is going in the right direction under the stewardship of the Magpies boss. He is quoted by the Chronicle as saying:

“I spent some time with him [Shearer] and asked him for some advice because he has experience: he knows the fans, the club, the city and everything. It was more asking him advice – please, tell me if we have made any mistakes. He was fine, he said it is going well so far.”

“He said we are doing well and going in the right direction. He was happy to see the club going in the right direction. He was supportive. He’s happy with the way things are going on.”

Newcastle are expected to make some changes for tonight’s match at Oakwell despite their convincing 3-1 win against Brentford at the weekend. Matt Ritchie and Chancel Mbemba are both fit and could feature. Captain Jamaal Lascelles has recovered from an illness which forced him off against the Bees and could start the match, while Mo Diame and striker Aleksandar Mitrovic are also tipped to start tonight against Paul Heckingbottom’s side who currently sit eleventh in the Championship.
