Newcastle utility player Vurnon Anita has revealed that there was a possible return home to the Netherlands on the cards in the summer transfer window.

The 27 year old has just one year left on his contract and although no direct bids were made for him in the summer, he was aware of some interest; most likely brought to his attention by his agent. He is quoted by the Chronicle as saying:

“There was some indirect interest, also from the Netherlands.”

The midfielder/full back has been a regular starter since the arrival of Rafa Benitez as manager at the club, and the Dutchman says he is keen to remain with the Magpies, although there is no news on a new contract:

“At Newcastle, I have experienced many good times, but in difficult times like now, I did not feel ready to need to leave. And I liked working with the manager, Rafa Benitez, in the second half of last season. My contract expires after this season, so it’s a year on full throttle.”

Anita has been ever-present in the Championship this campaign, playing as a right full back in the majority of his matches. He has started the last three league games against Rotherham United, Brentford and Barnsley, keeping out DeAndre Yedlin who has had to settle for a place on the bench despite performing well when called upon.
