Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles believes the new signings Rafa Benitez has brought in over the summer have had a tremendous impact on the players’ fight and team spirit.

Talking to Football on Five (quotes taken from NUFC.co.uk), the 22-year-old says the difference in attitude between last season and this season is a significant one.

Asked about the fight back from 3-1 down to win 4-3 against promotion rivals Norwich City last week, he said: “It just goes to show what the boys have got. It’s not just quality and talent that we’ve got; it’s heart and fight and desire.

”I think we lacked a little bit of it last season but the players that Rafa has brought in and the way some of the boys have turned it around this season, it’s excellent.

”If we play with that quality and determination, on the day we can beat anyone.”

The Championship will take a week’s break for the World Cup qualifiers but when they return, the Magpies will face Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday week.

The Bees have been very inconsistent so far this campaign and after beating promotion hopefuls Brighton away, as well as thrashing Reading 4-1 and Preston 5-0.

They also lost to Wolves 3-1 and drew 0-0 with relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic last weekend at home.

Still, they find themselves in seventh place with 18 points, four points behind the Magpies.
