Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot says he expects to be back in first team action in two to three weeks, and should be available as an option for manager Rafa Benitez after the international break.

The 30 year old suffered a serious knee injury on international duty for the Republic of Ireland back in March, and the recovery has taken seven months, but the Magpies is pleased by the progress he has been making in the light training work he has been doing with goalkeeping coach Simon Smith. He told the Chronicle:

“I am hoping to be training in full training in three weeks. I should be back training after the international break. Hopefully, I will look to play reserve games or get back to full training. Mid-November would be seven months so it’s not bad at all. I have trained three or four times a week with Simon Smith and getting stronger, it feels really good. In two or three weeks I will be involved.”

Elliot will have a fight on his hands to get back into the starting lineup. Karl Darlow has established himself as number one despite new signing and Belgian international Matz Sels starting the season as Benitez’s first choice. Having three keepers competing for a starting place means Rafa has even more options as the Magpies head in to the busiest part of the campaign.
