Newcastle winger Christian Atsu says he is slowly adapting to the physical demands of English football. Since arriving at Chelsea from Porto in 2013, the Ghanaian international has struggled to establish himself with failed loan spells at Everton and Bournemouth.

Talking about the differences between the Premier League and the Championship, the 24 year old believes the most significant difference is the physicality. He told Newcastle’s matchday programme before the Preston match (quotes via the Chronicle):

“The Championship is very difficult compared to the Premier League. I think I’m really adapting to the league, the physical aspect of the game, and I’m getting the opportunity from Rafa”

Atsu says he takes full responsibility for his failings in past loan spells as he has taken time to adapt to the speed of English football during his three years in the country:

“I have to be honest, I’ve had a very difficult time in the English league,” he said. “To adapt to the style of play was difficult – everything was quicker. I had little opportunity to prove myself but in football, you cannot blame anybody. You have to take responsibility.”

After just one league start in two loan spells at Premier League clubs, Rafa Benitez has given Atsu more opportunities already to shine at the Magpies. The winger has started two league matches and one EFL Cup tie so far on his loan spell, and will be hoping for more starts as Newcastle head in to the busy Christmas schedule.
