Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has credited manager Rafa Benitez for bringing in the right type of personalities into the Magpies squad over the summer.

Pre-season saw a huge turnover of personnel at the club with over 20 players departing the club either on loan or having been sold, while twelve new signings were introduced into the squad. Comparing the team spirit between last campaign and this season, Lascelles told the Chronicle that the new signings have made a big difference.

“I’ve never been involved in anything like this (before). Last season was a bit up and down. This season’s completely different. Rafa’s made some great signings, not just talented players but great lads. The dressing room is so important. It does go a long way. If you do things outside the dressing room, then you’re going to do it on the pitch.”

Many have questioned whether some players were totally committed to the cause last season and with players such as Andros Townsend, Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko jumping ship after the club’s relegation, it suggests that the club may have lost some talented individuals but gained a team who have total commitment to the Magpies.

The season is only 13 league games old though so we will have to see how the team spirit is sustained through a long campaign where there will certainly be challenging moments.
