Former Newcastle winger Andros Townsend’s father Troy Townsend has told TalkSPORT (quotes via the Evening Chronicle) that his son left St James’ Park this summer in order to ensure he was in with a chance of being selected for the England team once again.

Townsend left many Newcastle fans frustrated when he left for Crystal Palace in the summer for £13million after only being signed last January from Tottenham Hotspur. Townsend Senior explained the winger’s predicament to the radio station:

“Rafa done absolute wonders for him, ideally he would have loved to stay at the club. But if you’re gonna be noticed, if you’re gonna be recognised – obviously he had a massive disappointment in the summer (not being picked for the Euros) – and if you’re going to get yourself back in the area that he wants to be then unfortunately the Premier League is the only place to be.”

Townsend was swiftly replaced on Tyneside by Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie for £12million with the Scottish international moving down a league to play for the Magpies. The Crystal Palace winger meanwhile has been given a recall to the England side under Gareth Southgate for the World Cup qualifying games against Malta and Slovenia this week. The 25 year old replaced Raheem Sterling in the squad after the Manchester City winger had to withdraw because of injury.
