Newcastle winger Christian Atsu believes a change in attitude towards his fitness has allowed him to excel during his loan spell at the Magpies this season.

The Ghanaian was given very little game time during his spells on loan at Everton and Bournemouth, and the 24 year old has revealed that injuries played a big role in those moves not succeeding. The winger told Newcastle’s match day programme (quotes via The Mag) that he has been proactive in changing his diet, his sleep patterns and overall training regime to improve his levels of fitness:

“At Bournemouth, I had a lot of injuries that brought me setbacks in my football career. I left in January to Malaga and when I went there I had another injury again. It was so frustrating, but I thought: ‘I need to take good care of myself’.”

“I saw that I have to be responsible for these kind of things, so I tried to change how I eat, my sleep and everything. I think I’m more professional, more focused on my body than before.”

Newcastle are certainly seeing the fruits of this labour. The winger again impressed in the EFL Cup match against Preston North End last night after hitting the woodwork twice in the 6-0 rout.

Atsu does have some fierce competition to get into the Newcastle team though with both Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran also staking their claims for a starting berth.
