Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote has turned down a move to the United Arab Emirates because the offer did not meet his wage demands, according to the Shields Gazette.

Although the transfer window has closed for European clubs, sides in Dubai and Abu Dhabi can still buy players with a transfer deadline set for October 20th. The Ivorian has not played for Newcastle since the end of last season, and moves to both Galatasaray and Olympiakos fell through in August leaving the player in a state of limbo.

In his pre match press conference yesterday for the game against Wolves in the EFL Cup, Rafa Benitez gave the latest news on the 30 year old’s future with the Magpies:

“Cheick will not be involved in this game, but I am pleased with him. He knows this is still a time where we are waiting a little bit to see what happens. He has been training well, but we haven’t thought about him for this game. He will get a chance if nothing happens in the next few days and weeks.”

The UAE transfer window closes a month today so we shouldn’t expect Tiote to appear in a Newcastle shirt until at least after then if a move isn’t sorted out. It’s clear that Benitez does rate the player though so the Ivorian could see a similar turnaround in fortunes to Yoan Gouffran if he does stay.
