Newcastle legend Micky Quinn believes the defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend might have come at the right time for the Magpies.

Writing in his column for the Evening Chronicle, Quinn believes that the defeat will prevent any complacency setting in when playing against two rivals Aston Villa and Norwich City in their next two league matches:

“Defeats are never welcome when you’re a footballer, but sometimes they can arrive at just the right time to ensure complacency doesn’t set in. I just hope that is the case with Newcastle this time around and they get two big wins over Aston Villa and Norwich City over the course of the next week.”

Before their defeat to Wolves in the league, the Magpies had won six matches in all competitions. The defeat will certainly keep the players focused going into the match against Aston Villa tomorrow evening. No doubt, getting straight back to winning ways against Wolves in the EFL Cup will certainly ensure the the Magpies head into the match in a positive mindset, but with Rafa Benitez making a number of changes for the cup tie, it will be interesting to see how many of those players the Magpies boss keeps faith with for the next league match.
