Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie has defended forward Dwight Gayle after he missed a one on one chance against Aston Villa at the weekend.

The £12.5million signing could have put the Magpies 2-0 up in the first half but Gayle’s shot was saved by Villa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. The match eventually ended 1-1 after an 88th minute equaliser from Aaron Tshibola. Ritchie told the Evening Chronicle:

“There’s no criticism for Dwight. We’ve all missed chances and I missed one in the first half as well, the goalkeeper made a good save.We had a couple of good chances and on another day we’d take them.”

Gayle has scored four goals for Newcastle already this season since moving from Crystal Palace but he scored his last goal over a month ago in the 1-0 win against Bristol City in the league back on August 20th.

Out of the four main strikers, Gayle has had the most game time with seven starts in the nine league matches that the Magpies have played so far. He will be hoping to get back to scoring ways against top of the table Norwich City tomorrow night in a crucial promotion clash.
