Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle has told the Evening Chronicle about how fellow striker Aleksandar Mitrovic reacted to him scoring the last gasp winner against Norwich City on Wednesday night.

The Serbian international not only bear hugged and lifted manager Rafa Benitez off the ground at full time but also gave Gayle similar treatment whilst celebrating the goal in the final moments of injury time. Gayle said:

“He shook my head, suffocated me and headbutted me/ It was like being whip-lashed! I think he tried to injure me! Nah, he’s a great lad and as I said, we have great team spirit. He was just as excited as we all were. Those were unbelievable scenes at the end.”

Newcastle fans will be hoping for a more straightforward victory against Rotherham United tomorrow afternoon. The Millers sit bottom of the league with just one win in ten league matches but it will be important not to underestimate Alan Stubbs’ side after coming down from the high of Wednesday evening. No doubt Magpies boss Rafa Benitez will keep his players’ feet firmly on the ground and he will most likely make some changes to the starting eleven for the match at the New York stadium.
