Former Newcastle defender Didier Domi believes that Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin were good enough to succeed in the Premier League but the physical demands of English football may have proved too much.

Thauvin joined Newcastle for £15million in 2015 but was shipped back to Marseille on loan within six months, while Cabella spent a year on Tyneside after signing from Montpellier before also making the switch permanently to Marseille this summer after a loan spell. Domi was talking to BeIN Sports (translated by the Evening Chronicle) about Newcastle’s situation when he said:

“When you look at the quality of Thauvin and Cabella they could have done it. When you see players like David Silva and Juan Mata they aren’t that strong but they can get out of situations through their technique and intelligence. Cabella and Thauvin could have done it, but they could not handle it physically.”

“You could almost feel their struggle on the pitch. They could not understand what the coach wanted from them. There are cases like this when adapting is difficult, physically and in their lives. But they had to go because they weren’t successful.”

Domi also said that he believes Newcastle’s policy of buying French players had failed them. He felt having seven or eight players from one nation was excessive. He felt that to understand matches like the fiercely contested Tyne-Wear derby a “British core” is needed to communicate the importance of such games and also to ensure that everyone is speaking the same language in order to create the right atmosphere in the dressing room.
