Newcastle keeper Matz Sels has confirmed there was interest from Premier League clubs before he decided to sign for the Magpies this summer.

The former Belgium Under 21 international sealed a £6.5million from Pro League side Gent at the end of June, and he looks set to be first choice for Rafa Benitez in the Championship this season. Sels told the Evening Chronicle that he had no misgivings about signing for a club who had been relegated from the top flight:

“There were a few teams interested from the Premier League who were interested but Newcastle are a big club. It was strange to see them relegated but that’s football. I heard there was interest from Newcastle and took a call from Rafa Benitez. I was then convinced about what choice I would make. It’s not a team that belongs in the second division, they are Premier League. I was convinced of my choice.”

Sels is by no means guaranteed a starting place at St James’ Park though. The 24 year old will have a competition from four other keepers including Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman, as well as Tim Krul. The Dutch international is currently injured but there has been some uncertainty about his future at the club since the arrival of Sels. We will find out for certain who is first choice when the Magpies face Fulham in their first league match of the season on Friday night.
