Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez believes there are still a few things that need to improve before their first competitive match of the season, after their 2-0 friendly win against Southend United last night.

Goals from Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran sealed victory for the Magpies but Rafa told the Shields Gazette that although it was a good display, more work still needs to be done.

“We have to improve. It was a solid performance – the team was fine – but still we have to improve and hopefully we can adjust two or three things in one week and we will be a little bit better.”

Newcastle face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Friday week but the Toon Army will have one more friendly match to sharpen up before that. They will play Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday at St James Park, which should prove to be the biggest test so far in preseason. The Magpies are unbeaten in four friendly matches as the club step up preparations for the new season, with comfortable victories against Irish side Bohemians, Belgian side Lokeren and League One club Southend, as well as a 2-2 draw against Doncaster Rovers.
