Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has thanked the fans for the support he has received since he has arrived on Tyneside.

The Serbian’s combative attitude and style of play has made him a firm favourite among some supporters but it has also got him into trouble and he will miss the first four matches of the season after a poor challenge on Kyle Walker in the final game of last season against Tottenham in a 5-1 win.

Once he returns from suspension, the 21 year old says he wants to repay the fans’ faith in him by scoring more goals. He told the Evening Chronicle:

“It is why I signed here, and the reason I want to be a footballer. I enjoy every day in training and each game I play. I hope to give back a lot of the love from the fans with goals. We have a good relationship and I hope that continues this season. I want us to get promoted and for everybody to enjoy it as a group, the fans and players.”

Mitrovic scored nine goals in 22 starts and 12 substitute appearances last season in the Premier League but he will face competition from new £10million signing Dwight Gayle as well as possibly another new recruit as Rafa Benitez looks to strengthen his forward with both Ross McCormack and Daryl Murphy linked with a move to St James’ Park in the past week.
