Newcastle United could lose £5m from the sale of Georginio Wijnaldum due to the sell on fee owed to former club PSV Eindhoven, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

The publication contacted PSV to confirm the sell on clause and a spokesman for the Dutch club responded with a statement:

“We can confirm that there is a resale rate. But we will not comment on further details.”

De Telegraaf believe the sell on fee to be 20% of any sale as they report PSV would get €5m from a €25m sale, but reports in the UK believe the fee to be £25million, meaning the Magpies would have to pay £5m back to PSV.

Newcastle paid PSV £14.5million last summer for Wijnaldum and although the Magpies will still see a profit of £5.5million from the transfer, it is now clear why the club were looking to hold out for a higher fee. The 25 year old is on the verge of completing his move to Anfield with a medical expected to take place at the Premier League club today.
