Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley has met with Rafa Benitez this week to discuss the manager’s future according to Sky Sports.

The Tyneside outfit were relegated in midweek following North East rivals’ Sunderland beating Everton 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Benitez was brought to St James’ Park in an effort to stave off demotion to English football’s second tier but despite some positive results it was too little, too late for the Geordies.

It is believed that the Spaniard has a release clause in his contract that allows him to walk away from the Tyneside club now that Championship football beckons – but his future appears to be in the balance.

Some media reports have stipulated that Benitez has been taken by the club’s fans and is considering being the man to try to steer Newcastle back to the Premier League.

However, a host of other clubs, including Everton, have been mentioned as possible destinations for the former Real Madrid boss.
