Newcastle United are hoping that a bond with the club’s fans will convince Rafa Benitez to stay with the Tyneside outfit, even if they are relegated this term, according to The Telegraph.

The Spaniard has been drafted in as a potential saviour for the St James’ Park outfit following Steve McClaren’s dismissal, with the North East club in dire straits with a handful of games remaining.

Despite a win over Swansea and draw against Manchester City, Newcastle need a host of positive results in the remainder of the campaign if they are to defy the odds and avoid a drop to The Championship.

The latest report suggests that Mike Ashley will look to try and keep Benitez at the club even if they are demoted to the second tier, with the love of the St James’ Park supporters a potential selling point.

The former Inter Milan and Liverpool boss is said to have a clause in his contract allowing him to walk away from Newcastle if they suffer relegation, while he has been linked with the Spain national team job also.
